After I gave birth this March, I had not one but two different Postpartum Birth Doulas helping me in my home. In my personal opinion I cannot think of a better gift for a mom, than paying for either her Doula or her Postpartum Doula. I was helped with everything from getting time to take a shower, to her doing my dishes. I received support during my difficulties nursing (my baby has a thick frenulum). Here is what a Postpartum Doula can offer:
For you and your partner:
- Emotional and physical support for mother
- Support father through his transition to his new role
- Parenting guidance
- Breastfeeding support
- Active listening
- Resource referrals (books, counselors, websites, etc)
For your family and home:
- Cooking healthy meals for your family
- Helping older siblings with adjustment
- Caring for your infant (so you can take a shower, sleep, be with your partner or other children, etc)
- Light housekeeping (including laundry, dishes, etc)
- Running errands
Scheduling postpartum doula care
Many families want support immediately after the birth, ensuring that the parents can get off to a good start with breastfeeding and family bonding. Some families prefer to have at least six weeks of regular help a few times a week during the day. Other families prefer to taper care, with more visits during the first few days, gradually decreasing over the next few weeks. Many mothers want extra support and company when their partner returns to work, so they are not alone with the infant all day.
I recommend the two Doulas that cared for me;Jacquie Fulop, and Melissa Hunter
